Locate the records
Ask each insurer and retirement-plan administrator how to confirm primary and contingent beneficiaries. Keep a dated checklist of what you reviewed.
Revisit life changes
Marriage, divorce, a birth, a death or a change in care responsibilities can prompt a review. Do not assume an old designation still expresses your wishes.
Include the right professionals
Questions involving minors, trusts, blended families, inherited accounts or estate documents belong with qualified legal and tax professionals as appropriate. Avoid making changes solely from a social media example.
Start a family conversation
Consider who should know where your records are kept and whom to contact. Protect sensitive details; an initial email or public comment is not the place for account numbers.
